Plantar Plate Injuries

Plantar plate injuries are common among athletes and runners but can also affect anyone who spends much time standing or walking. The plantar plate is a thick ligament that runs along the bottom of the foot, connecting the toes to the bones in the ball of the foot. When this ligament becomes damaged or torn, it can cause pain and inflammation in the affected area. If the plantar plate ruptures, it is often evident that the toe deviates rapidly towards one side.

Symptoms of plantar plate injuries may include swelling, tenderness, and a feeling of instability or weakness in the foot.

Treatment options include rest, ice, offloading, footwear prescription, specialised orthotics, specific splinting, and, in some cases, surgery.

If you suspect that you may have a plantar plate injury, it is important to see a sports podiatrist as soon as possible to receive an accurate diagnosis and the appropriate treatment.
